As our culture becomes more aware of the desperate need for postpartum and lactation support, there are more options than ever.  This is such a wonderful development AND there is still so much work to do.  One outcome of this growth means that you have options when choosing your providers. Honestly, as a breastfeeding supporter and educator, this fills me with relief and optimism.  But it also means that I need to show you, the parents, why Songbird Lactation is the right choice for you and your growing family.

Before my son was born, I would have said that breastfeeding education would be interesting or helpful, but by no means a “must have.”  In fact, I did skip it!  In a 16 hour childbirth class, it was covered for about 30 minutes by a guest teacher over Zoom. That felt pretty adequate; how hard could it be?  Boy howdy.  Within an hour of his birth, we were hit with a triple whammy of jaundice, separation, and engorgement.  All of a sudden, a quick Q&A style presentation felt woefully insufficient.

Once we got home and got the hang of breastfeeding, I set about figuring out what had happened and how I could feel more in charge of what breastfeeding was left for us.  What I uncovered was an incredible wealth of information, almost all of which was completely new to me.  As he grew older and we added pumping and daycare to our repertoire, I became better versed in the physiology of lactation.  How do bodies make milk and what can get in the way?  Why does pumping seem so different from nursing when it’s generally the same process?

When he was about one year old, I decided that I was going to pass this learning on to other parents who may not be interested in doing hours and hours of reading on their own.  He’s almost five now and I’m finally launching my counseling business!  Through these years of professional preparation and training, I’ve spoken to hundreds of parents and come to understand the many ways that breast or chestfeeding can fit into a family.

You’ve probably heard that it’s impossible to please everyone, but that’s my goal and I think it can be achieved.  I am genuinely interested in getting to know you and your family.  I want to hear your goals and understand how you see infant feeding fitting into your days and your family.  I love to study lactation at every intersection with life - this helps me to guide you in creating a plan that doesn’t just get milk to your baby.  We will make sure that your lactation plan includes your whole self: physical well-being, mental health, professional aims, and whatever else makes up how you see yourself.  Songbird Lactation's counseling is a whole-person and whole-family lactation vision.

If that sounds like a fit for you, please book a session with me.  I can’t wait to help you form your breastfeeding vision.
