Who Should Come to My Lactation Appointment?
Updated: 3 days ago

Short answer: whoever you want.
Long answer: Everybody loves a new baby! You may find yourself swimming in requests for your company. "Oh I'll come to that appointment with you, I can carry the diaper bag!" What a kind offer. But this is a good opportunity to practice using that fabled intuition that baby's bring. Will that person be a help or someone else to look after?
A lactation appointment is an interactive and informative session that requires your full attention. Whoever comes with you should be trusted to uphold that atmosphere for you. After that consideration, ask yourself if this person is coming to support you in feeding your baby or if they have their own ideas about what you "should" be doing.
In my experience, an appointment is helped along by someone who is there as an extra set of eyes and ears. They will make sure you ask all the questions you intended and they'll only take the baby when you've offered. A good companion is often someone that is helping you care for the baby. They may have questions of their own that will add meaningfully to the content of the appointment. Importantly, this person does not have to be a co-parent or grandparent. Is your best friend by your side through everything? Bring them along. Does your doula offer a postpartum session and her support really connected with you? She'd be a great companion!
Of course, there is always the option to bring your baby and no one else. The appointment really is for you two and it may be a nice opportunity for an adventure together. Practice your new nursing confidence in a little coffee shop, maybe grab a cozy wrap sweater to congratulate yourselves on a job well done.
No matter who you bring with you, Songbird Lactation will put a plan together for you, your baby, and your real life. Book your session today!
